Jordan is an unusual honeymoon country, and that is precisely its appeal. It is compact enough that you are never spending a whole day in transit, dramatic enough that every few hours the landscape changes completely, and hospitable in a way that is genuinely disarming. In a single week you can go from a candlelit canyon to a desert camp to a spa on the lowest shore on earth.
Petra by candlelight
On selected evenings the Siq is lined with more than a thousand candles in paper lanterns, and you walk the kilometre-long gorge in near silence to find the Treasury lit from below, with Bedouin music and mint tea in the plaza.
It is touristy and it is also unforgettable — go, and go early enough to get a place at the front. Then return in daylight the next morning, because the two experiences are nothing alike.
A night under glass in Wadi Rum
The bubble camps of Wadi Rum were made for this: a transparent dome pitched beneath a sandstone cliff, a private bathroom, and the Milky Way directly overhead from your pillow. Many camps will arrange a private dinner set away from the main tent — a table, lanterns, and several hundred square kilometres of empty desert.
Ask for a camp on the quieter eastern side of the reserve if seclusion matters more to you than facilities.
The Dead Sea, slowly
Float in water so dense it holds you like a deckchair, coat yourselves in black mineral mud, rinse off, and then do very little for two days. The resorts along the northern shore are built down the hillside in terraces, with infinity pools that appear to spill into the sea and sunsets over the hills of the West Bank that turn the whole basin pink.
This is the part of the trip to book generously. After Petra's stairs and Wadi Rum's jeeps, a couple of unhurried spa days are exactly right.
Finishing on the Red Sea
If you have a few extra days, Aqaba adds a third kind of landscape — warm water, coral reefs a short boat ride from shore, and easy, unglamorous seafood restaurants along the corniche. A private boat for an afternoon costs far less than you would expect and is the simplest luxury in Jordan.
